US electric-vehicle manufacturer that names its direct cobalt suppliers in its impact reports. Its 2023 report lists four: Kamoto Copper Company and Mutanda Mining, both marked Glencore and at mine tier in DR Congo, and Huayou and CNGR at refiner tier in China; it says it sourced more than 55% of its cobalt directly from mines and refiners that year, that it only purchases cobalt from large-scale mines, and that it worked with its supplier Glencore to launch a public satellite-monitoring system of the KCC operation. Its 2021 report says it procured more than half its cobalt directly from nine mining and chemicals companies, unnamed, and that the DRC is an important source of cobalt for Tesla batteries. Huayou and CNGR each announced in 2022 a contract to supply it with ternary precursor to the end of 2025. The supplier lists are Tesla's own and give no volume per supplier.
