Datastake

A digital infrastructure company, registered in Estonia as Datastake OÜ, that designs, builds and maintains client-owned data systems, several of them serving artisanal and small-scale mining and traceability work across the DRC and other countries.

What it is

According to a commercial aggregator of the Estonian Business Register (the primary register, ariregister.rik.ee, was not opened, so these fields are single-source), Datastake OÜ carries registry code 16218735, is a private limited company (osaühing), was registered on 29 April 2021 in Tallinn, and is classified under EMTAK 62901, "Information technology and computer activities", with a share capital of EUR 2,500.

In its own words, Datastake "designs, builds and maintains the client-owned systems that turn" local knowledge "into trusted evidence", and describes itself as the result of "more than a decade of research and fieldwork in countries that postcolonial narratives have written off". Its Terms and Privacy pages name no legal entity beyond "Datastake" itself.

Role in DRC cobalt

Datastake OÜ is a named partner, alongside FairPhone B.V. and the Alliance pour une Mine Responsable Europe, of a EUR 320,000 EPRM-funded project (NL-KVK-27378529-EPRM23S014) developing a book-and-claim credit system for artisanal cobalt mining in the DRC, running 1 May 2024 to 28 February 2027. A Fair Cobalt Alliance account of a 2026 site visit describes EPRM as having "provided funding to the FCA and partners (Fairphone, Datastake, and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM)" to digitalise and scale that credit system, and separately describes "a civil society workshop organised by Datastake" that brought in local NGOs and mining cooperatives including the FCA's partner cooperative CMDS.

On Datastake's own applications page, that project is named Oreka, described as "Digital infrastructure for the Responsible Minerals Credits scheme", "Funded by EPRM" and, as of the page's 2026 milestones, "In deployment" at artisanal cobalt sites in the DRC. The same page describes KOTA, a separate Datastake system for banking-sector counterparty onboarding in DRC artisanal mining, as "Founded with Trust Merchant Bank and managed day to day by Datastake"; that account is Datastake's own and is not independently corroborated. A single account from La Sentinelle des Ressources Naturelles, describing a February 2026 Kolwezi workshop on a separate EPRM-funded due-diligence project, names the implementer as "HIVE (Datastake)" without stating what the relationship between the two is.

Open questions

  • The sources checked for this round carry no independent criticism of Datastake.
  • Datastake's own site names "Datastake" as the operator and no further legal entity; the Estonian primary register would confirm the registry facts independently of the aggregator that supplies them here, and is left for a future round to open.
